Meet our teachers

Mr. Jorgen Hoberg, Music
Mrs. Sandy Hoberg, Kinder

hobergMusic teacher Jorgen Hoberg and his wife, Kindgergarten teacher Sandy Hoberg, have loved, lived and taught the last 26 years as part of the St. Gregory the Great Catholic School community.

When it comes to members of the school community who are invested in the mission of the school, they are examples to the entire St. Gregory's family.

Jorgen is currently in his 27th year of teaching at the school while his wife, Sandy, is completing her 26th year at the school.

Early in their married life, they both agreed to pray and ask God to lead them as they sought employment for Jorgen. They are confident that God led them to the right place. When Jorgen saw an ad for a teacher at St. Gregory the Great Catholic School in the Northside Recorder newspaper, he responded and was hired. Jorgen began teaching in 1983 and Sandy joined the teaching staff the next year. Their combined 53 years of teaching at St. Gregory's speaks to their commitment and love for the school and its students.

"We stay at St. Gregory because it is where God has called us to serve, and because of the loving family atmosphere and fellowship found here. The school has grown very much since we came," says Mr. Hoberg. "In the past several years it has become the best Catholic school in the city --it's always been good -- thanks to Msgr. O'Gorman and the school Administration led by Mrs. Gomez. This school has the best faculty and staff I have ever seen. Teaching with people who truly love and care for the students makes a difference."

Throughout the years, Jorgen has been a Coach, has taught 4th grade and middle school, and now has served as the music teacher for several years. Sandy has continuously taught Kindergarten.

The Hobergs' own children, Brian ('91) and Katie ('97), both graduated from St. Gregory the Great, and in a little more than a year, their two grandsons will begin Pre-Kinder. It has been quite the journey for the Hobergs as they watched their children graduate and now prepare for their grandchildren to attend St. Gregory the Great. They marvel at the fact that they are now teaching the children of their first students from years ago. The wonderful circle of life and the generations of families in the St. Gregory the Great family have made their work here more than just a job -- it is truly a ministry.

Both of the Hobergs realize the wonder of teaching and say they relish seeing the light of learning brighten a child's fac. Sandy reflects on the many ways that God has worked through that learning.

"I have seen God bring families into the community of St. Gregory the Great to share in the learning and fellowship that is so beautiful here," says Sandy. "I have also been amazed at how God will bring families here even before they knew they were going to need the support of such an amazing community."

Sandy considers it a blessing to work in a place where every day it's a blessing to come to work: "I'm one of those blessed people to truly say I love what I do. The excitement of the children is contagious and it encourages me to provide more and more activities that will involve them in the whole learning process.

"What is so important is the ability to reflect on the faith, to share your beliefs and to call on the name of Jesus whenever He is needed."

Both agree, "Family is everything to us." It is truly apparent as they make St. Gregory the Great not only their work tradition but also part of their family tradition as well. They will both be a part of the school -- sharing joys and trials and working united in faith -- as long as God calls them to teach.

Wherever they go, they know they are called to be witnesses and examples of Christ. For them, St. Gregory the Great continues to produce dividends for life.
