From Mrs. Cortez's 8th grade
It is hard to believe we have been in school for 8 weeks already, time sure flies
when you're busy learning. So much is going on in Room 5 that it is difficult to
contain the excitement. From the first bell to the last; the students are exploring,
questioning, applying and illustrating what they have learned. 6th grade
Science is learning about prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. The students have
examined bacterial cells using a microscope and have watched video clips of
scientists and how they study cells. In 6th grade Religion, the students are
learning about creation and our relationship with Jesus. The students created
a collage showing sin in our world and we discussed how sin separates humans
from God. In 7th grade Social Studies, the students have examined the four regions
of Texas and understand how geographical features and climate affect
where people live and work. This week we are learning about the first Texans
and how they migrated in search of food and how different cultures developed.
In 8th grade Social Studies, we began the year learning about how the first people
arrived in the Americas. The students investigated how and why powerful
empires arose and how they adapted to their environment. This took us on a
journey of the changing world. The students evaluated why activities of early
traders encouraged exploration. Currently, we are researching early English
settlements and how Jamestown became the first successful English colony. In
8th grade Speech and English, the students are working on presenting a personal
narrative and preparing to write a definition essay respectively.
As an 8th grade homeroom teacher, my 8-3 class is preparing to visit various
Catholic High Schools. In addition, the 8th grade class of 2012 will participate
in their first team building activity by attending Mo Ranch on October 14th.
There is no denying, we have been extremely busy. We are learning many new
things and living out our faith daily. Our schools theme is "Lord, make me an
instrument of Thy Peace." Each day we strive to live by these words in all we
say and do. Thank you in advance for your support and most importantly your
prayers.
"Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier."
Mother Teresa

From Ms. Burch's 8th grade
We are at the beginning of another exciting year at St. Gregory the Great Catholic School. I am excited to be
teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grades this year. Also, Room 4 will continue to be the home away from home for the
students in my homeroom, part of the Class of 2012.
The 6th Grade will be studying the Bible with a main focus on the Old Testament. We have begun looking at
the Bible as God's Divine Revelation to us, an invitation to be in relationship with him. This week we will
begin with the story of creation and then move through the Old Testament to the Macabees. We will end the
year looking at the coming of Christ and the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies.
The 7th Grade text is We Live Our Faith as Disciples of Jesus. We will learn more about who God is, who
Jesus is, who the Holy Spirit is and how we are to live as a disciple. Another big part of our year will be
looking at the Sacraments: their origin, how they help us live as disciples and how we celebrate them.
We Live Our Faith as Members of the Church is the title of our 8th Grade text. This course presents the
Church from her beginning at the Pentecost event through her history, encompassing her teachings and
Tradition. It presents the mission of the Church, entrusted to her by Jesus, as the responsibility of all
baptized Catholics.
The 8th Grade is looking forward to an exciting year. We will be guided by the Scripture verse, "I am the way,
the truth and the light." We will be going on our Retreat to Mo Ranch in the middle of October. The Class of
2012 will rededicate themselves to be student leaders for their school community. It should be a great year!
