About St. Gregory the Great Catholic School
St. Gregory The Great Catholic Church and School is nestled in the beautiful city of Balcones Heights, the crossroads of San Antonio. St. Gregory The Great Catholic School opened in 1955 under the Sisters of Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Congregation.
Our Catholic Community exemplifies the spirit
of Catholic faith beginning with the Pastor and and manifesting itself throughout the entire school community. St Gregory the Great
is a fully accredited school challenging children in grades Pre-K3 - 8th grade both spiritually and academically.
Our Philosophy
St. Gregory the Great Catholic School endorses its educational ministry through the three objectives of personal spirituality, social justice, and a strong academic program in accordance with Catholic values. This commitment extends to building Christian community and to fostering Christian service.
We endeavor to promote the development of each child according to his/her spiritual growth and intellectual aptitude. As a Christian community, we take a personal interest in each student's emotional needs, physical needs and cultural background. We partner with the family in the education and formation of the whole child.
Key Components of St. Gregory the Great School Catholic Identity
SERVICE
- School clubs and organizations commit themselves to at least one community service project during the school year; some do much more.
- Students in Grades 6-8 have a service-hour minimum requirement; students in Grade 5 participate in community service as a class.
- Our school has a shining record of crisis care or service to the community, such as the recent aid provided to victims of Hurricane Ike.
PRAYER
- We host a Faculty Prayer Group that meets daily before school starts. Every meeting among teachers, parents and families begins in prayer.
- The PTC Spiritual Committee meets in the school courtyard one morning a month to pray for students by name.
- Grade 8 students present the Living Stations of the Cross every year.
- Students pray the Rosary together in the months of October and May.
- Students meet for ad hoc special prayer services and remembrances, such as on 9/11.
CELEBRATION
- The Liturgical Choir is one of our most active clubs on campus.
- Annually, we celebrate the Feast of St. Gregory the Great.
- The PTC hosts families for an Advent Prayer Service and Posadas in December.
- In May, we celebrate the Crowning of Our Lady.
GROWTH
- Spiritual Retreats are conducted annually for each grade level.
- Faculty and Staff Retreats are held twice a year.
- Grade 4 students learn about the saints by creating and displaying "soap-bottle saints."
- We honor Lenten observations, such as No-meat Fridays and silent-lunch Wednesdays.
- All Catholic students receive Sacrament Preparation.
COMMUNITY
- We are honored to enjoy the presence of Religious Men and Women in service to our school: Mnsgr. Michael O'Gorman, pastor; Sister Carmel O'Callaghan, PBVM, pastoral associate; Sister M. Cabrini Foley, PBVM, instructional assistant to Grade 1.
- The school has been blessed with the managerial & spiritual leadership of Principal Mrs. Martha Gomez for 10 years.
